Tribal Cat Mask
This was a ceramics project where we were instructed to create a mask. I took inspiration from Native American to create this piece, "The Tribal Cat". This piece was designed as if cats were Native Americans. I tarted out by rolling a slab of clay on the slab roller, then laying the slab over a face cast that was pre-made. The mouth piece actually broke off during the bisque fire, but was glued back on after the pit fire. The pit firing gave it the burnt, smokey look that I love, I thought it'd give it a more ancient quality. I also used thin wire to mimic piercings in the cat's ears, because I have seen many tribes with piercings. I then selectively painted the mask using Native American masks as inspiration, and then used polyurethane to keep it intact. I wanted this to look like a piece of the Native Cats art that we have found from history. I am actually quite satisfied and proud of this piece.
